Paula Holt

Governor's Personal Statement

I am currently Dean of the College of Health and Social Care, University of Derby. We educate a full range of health and social care professionals from Foundation degree to Doctoral level. I started my career as a General nurse, specialising in acute medicine, then I became a mental health nurse working in acute psychiatry and care of older people with mental illness. I was an Army officer for 8 years serving in SE England, Germany and Scotland heading up mental health services for Forces personnel and their families, and was the psychiatric / psychological support to troops on operational tours of Bosnia in 1993/4 and 1997. I returned to the NHS in 1999 heading up a drug and alcohol team and mentally disordered offender services, and then set up a mandated drug treatment and rehabilitation service for offenders. I spent 9 years at Staffordshire University as a Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer in Nursing, and moved to the University of Derby as Head of Nursing in 2011. As a Dean my mission is for the University to positively influence the quality of health care within our region. As a Governor I am passionate about supporting and enhancing the quality of mental health services, and I will harness my experience, drive and enthusiasm to support the Trust to be the best it can be for all individuals, families and communities that require it's services.

Gemma Stacey

Governor's Personal Statement

Dr Gemma Stacey qualified as a mental health nurse in 2004 after completing the undergraduate Master of Nursing program at the University of Nottingham. She went onto work for the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust in a range of recovery orientated community services. In 2006 Gemma commenced a part time research post at the University of Nottingham which involved managing an action research project exploring service user involvement in the assessment of student nurses in practice (SUSA). She has gone on to implement and evaluate a range of educational initiatives centred on lived experience. This complements Gemma's doctoral research interest in the socialisation of student nurses and the educational factors which influence the development, maintenance and expression of person centred values. She is the leader of the Critical Values Based Practice Network who conduct research into this area along with an explicit focus on the perception and influence of power and hierarchy amongst professional groups. Gemma is currently employed as an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham where she is the Lead for Graduate Entry Nursing.
