Public Trust Governors

David Wilcoxson

Governor's Personal Statement

David is a husband, father, and grandfather who believes that in society we are all equal each having our own unique skills. He is passionate about becoming a public governor within the constituency of Amber Valley North, where he and his family have lived all their lives. He believes that we should not treat others differently and that we must remain non-judgmental helping build trust and rapport and listening with compassion to others when in need. Throughout his life he has had first-hand experience within the NHS and as such, seen many positive and negative changes which has subsequently reinforced his work ethics and current ambition of training to become an Occupational Therapist - whose core beliefs are empathy, compassion and treating every individual holistically, and remaining client centred at all times. This further highlighted the importance in the NHS continued commitment of putting people first, creating patient empowerment. David feels that the personal skills he will bring to his role as Public Governor and the subsequent life experience places him at the forefront of capability.

John Morrissey

Governor's Personal Statement

I was honoured to be elected Public Governor for Amber Valley South in January 2014. I have lived in Amber Valley most of my life and went to school in Belper where I became a GP for 37 years. As governor I have been able to attend many board and council meetings and public events all over Derbyshire. I have been privileged to take part in Quality Visits that enable a much better idea of how Derbyshire Healthcare's complex operations work in practice and I have observed that it tries and largely succeeds in putting its Values into practice. I have also attended board meetings and events organised by commissioners of services and other of Derbyshire Healthcare's partners to try to see matters from the perspective of these other organisations.

Moira Kerr

Governor's Personal Statement

I stood as a governor because people said services were not working for them. Holding the Trust to account and challenging some outdated perspectives has required courage and broad shoulders but I am trying to work more collaboratively, whilst not losing sight of the vision of a service which can meet peoples diverse needs respectfully and make their goal of living healthily a reality. Positive feedback from some service users and front line staff is a great incentive to keep going, even when ploughing through wordy documents!

Ruth Greaves

Governor's Personal Statement

Just like so many people nowadays, I have family and friends who have suffered with mental health issues. I have supported them in their private lives, and also through their treatment with Derbyshire Healthcare. As a mother of four, with two grown-up step-sons, and two teenage daughters, I am particularly aware of the pressures on young people; at school, at work, and in their social life. I am concerned that the stresses and strains of modern day living will increase the need for mental healthcare in the future; and I worry that people are increasingly isolated in our technological society, and feel alone in their distress. Derbyshire Healthcare need to step up and meet these challenges with an efficient and effective service which can reach people in the community. They need to explore innovative ways to engage the community and to tailor the service to the needs of today-s society. I have over 20 years experience in business, improving systems of work for efficiency. I have also worked in the not-for-profit, voluntary sector, where I created a local community charity which helped unemployed people to find work and training. With this experience I hope to help Derbyshire Healthcare, not only with organisational efficiency, but also in reaching out and engaging with the community. Since my appointment to the Council of Governors I have worked on Quality issues, with the aim of improving the services provided by the Trust. My focus so far has been on Children-s Services, but I am also mindful of the special needs of the rural community, and will be working to improve service delivery to outlying communities. If anyone from Derbyshire Dales would like to comment on the services provided, or has ideas for improvements, then I would like to hear from them. Also, if anyone has comments or suggestions concerning Children-s Services, then I would be interested to know their views. I promise to do my utmost to help Derbyshire Healthcare to improve their services for the people of Derbyshire.

Enabling them to reach their full potential which is of great importance to her. This was achieved with consistency, care, respect and above all else empowerment.

Helen Sentance

Governor's Personal Statement

Helen was born in Derby; she grew up and lived in Long Eaton; so she knows the South Erewash community very well. For most of my career she has worked in Admin and Planning roles; starting in aviation and then the motor trade, NHS and most recently in Media. I spent over 4 years working in the Emergency Department at the QMC in Nottingham and a year working in the Critical care Department at the Derby Royal and have been working in Media for 10 years. Through this, she has developed many skills; She is highly organized, tenacious and very practical. Helen likes people, has a good knowledge of human frailty and is empathic, supportive and unafraid to challenge when needed. She first developed an interest in Mental Health when her Grandfather suffered from dementia in the early 1980s, subsequently her brother-in-law suffered from depression and her late husband had a breakdown when his twin died. Her father now has dementia. Thankfully, with the help of the Mental Health Trust and with her support and encouragement, her husband recovered and trained to be an independent mental health advocate; working for Derbyshire Mind for 13 years until his untimely death earlier this year. She feels that being a member of the governorship council will give her the opportunity to contribute to the running of the Trust as a current Trust member and as a legacy of the difference that her late husband made to the lives of many vulnerable people.
